FAQ

Guess the Player questions

How does the NFL passer rating formula work?

Four per-attempt components — completion rate, yards, touchdowns, interceptions — are each scaled and capped at 2.375, summed, divided by six, and multiplied by 100. The caps are why the maximum is exactly 158.3.

What is a perfect passer rating?

158.3. It requires at least a 77.5% completion rate, 12.5 yards per attempt, a touchdown on at least 11.875% of throws, and zero interceptions — all four caps hit at once.

What is a good passer rating?

The league average has drifted to the low 90s in the modern passing game. A 100+ season is Pro Bowl form; the all-time single-season record is Aaron Rodgers’ 122.5 in 2011.

Is this the same as QBR?

No. ESPN’s QBR is a proprietary 0–100 model that folds in rushing, sacks, and situation. Passer rating is the older official NFL formula — this calculator — and it counts only the passing line.

Why can a bad game still rate near 39?

Throw every pass incomplete and the completion and yardage components floor at zero, but with no interceptions the fourth component stays maxed — the formula’s famous quirk: an all-incompletions game rates 39.6.
